2025-2026 Nina Fay Calhoun Int'l Relations Synopsis

Be inspired by the International Relations service projects shared by Altrusa District Nine Clubs... Winner were announced and recognized at the 2026 District Nine Conference in Amarillo.

Altrusa Dallas: “Building Readers Across Continents - A Book of Their Own”

"Building Readers Across Continents - A Book of Their Own" provided funding for low-income students at Kensington Primary School in Perth, Western Australia, to participate in the Scholastic Book Club. Inspired by a firsthand observation, our club donated US$1,000 to establish an ongoing book fund. In 2025, 39 students received 78 books, with funding remaining to continue the program into 2026. By removing financial barriers to book ownership, the project fostered literacy, created an international partnership, and reflected Altrusa's commitment to improving lives through education.

Altrusa Greenville: “Days for Girls”

The Altrusa Club of Greenville partnered with the McKinney chapter of Days for Girls assemble sustainable feminine hygiene kits for girls and women in underserved countries. Volunteers contributed nearly 200 service hours preparing 739 kit components, helping provide reusable menstrual supplies that support health, dignity, and education. The project raised awareness about global menstrual inequity and encouraged community involvement through hands-on service and outreach. Funded through club fundraising efforts and supported by local partnerships, the initiative strengthened Altrusa’s international mission while empowering women and girls to remain in school and participate fully in their communities.

Altrusa North San Antonio: “Days For Girls – Women’s Health and Reproduction Support and Education”

As North SA began our journey in 2019, none of us had heard of Days for Girls or their mission. When Altrusa International Foundation adopted DFG as a signature project in 2018, we became interested. Each year we increased our contributions and volunteer hours, but this year has been the best year ever! We increased our donations to 28 yards of fabric and our monetary donation increased by 25%. The two successful events were designated as membership drives with 20 guests, 50% member participation, 111 volunteer hours and one guest was invited to join our club and became an Altrusan!

Altrusa San Antonio: “Days for Girls”

Altrusa San Antonio once again joined a dedicated group of volunteers to manufacture sustainable, washable menstrual hygiene products. This time for girls in Central America. We donated funds, products and our time, meeting for a few hours each month to put together a kit that will change these girls lives. They can stay in school longer, get their education and often return to make the village even better. 200 kits were made. Our Altrusa red shirts were a recognizable part of every work day. Every Girl, Everywhere, Period.

Altrusa Temple: “Dominica Little Library Recovery Focus on Health Literacy”

International health literacy was the focus of The Dominica Little Library Recovery, which concentrated on health literacy. The mission for this organization is to cultivate a national network of leaders who provide books, supplies, and projects to support early literacy in underfunded schools.

Altrusa Waxahachie: “Waxahachie to Uganda”

Altrusa International of Waxahachie partnered with the nonprofit World Embrace to launch “Waxahachie to Uganda,” a book collection and shipment project supporting a new community library in Gulu, Uganda. The club mobilized broad community support, including area businesses (e.g., Half Price Books, Smoothie King, and Starbucks) and a local school, to surpass its target by collecting 1,675 children’s books. On June 13, 2026, ten volunteers (6 members, 2 community volunteers, 2 children) spent 24.5 hours sorting, labeling, and boxing the books for shipment. This global project expands literacy internationally and lays the groundwork for a continuing partnership with World Embrace.

2026 Conference Service and Workshops

70th Annual Altrusa District Nine Conference

April 17-19, 2026 - Amarillo TX

Join us for the excitement of the District Nine Conference — where inspiration, service, and connection come together for an unforgettable experience.

This year we are excited to introduce a new feature: our "Journey into Service" Hands-On Edition (See graphic below), giving attendees the opportunity to roll up their sleeves and begin conference by serving together in the true spirit of Altrusa. It’s the perfect way to kick off a weekend dedicated to making a difference.

District Nine is proud to support Tralee Crisis Center as our All Conference Service Project. Altrusans and Clubs are asked to donate everyday toiletry and household items, personal and baby needs, as well as bathroom and kitchen items. A Dual Member—also called a Non-Primary Member—is an Altrusan who chooses to belong to two Altrusa clubs at the same time.

One club is designated as the Primary Club
The other is the Non-Primary (Dual) Club

Dual membership allows members to expand service, stay connected after moving, or support both a traditional and a virtual club.

2024-2025 Nina Fay Calhoun Int'l Relations Synopsis

Be inspired by the International Relations service projects shared by Altrusa District Nine Clubs... Winner were announced and recognized at the 2026 District Nine Conference in Amarillo.

1st Place

Richardson: "Days for Girls - Assisting in Providing Sustainable Menstrual Solutions Worldwide"

Days for Girls is impacting over 3.5 million women and girls all over the world through providing access to sustainable fabric menstrual products and menstruation education. This year, Altrusa Richardson assisted the Highland Village Days for Girls (DfG) Team assemble over 600 kits, many of which were distributed in Honduras. Altrusa Richardson by providing over 402 yards of flannel, 102 yards of polyurethane laminate fabric, and 559 pairs of panties. The donations were so significant that the Highland Village Team was able to share the fabric with 2 neighboring Days for Girls Teams for a pad-making event.

2nd Place

Greenville: "Homes Altrusa Built"

Altrusa International of Greenville partnered with House for a Home to construct three sustainable homes in Kisumu, Kenya. Inspired by a local presentation, the project was funded through realtor donations and club fundraising. By using local labor and materials, the initiative directly improved living conditions for ten individuals, stimulated the local economy, and fostered cultural exchange. The project demonstrated Altrusa’s global outreach and commitment to community empowerment. It also elevated international awareness of Altrusa’s mission through collaborative service and cross-cultural impact.

3rd Place

San Antonio: "Altrusa San Antonio Builds a Bridge of Hope for Mexico"
Casa Hogar Rio Bravo in Reynosa, Mexico helps children that have been abandoned, neglected or abused giving them as normal of a life as possible. Each home has 2 house parents living with them helping all the way through High School. We started helping by donating $200 and they inscribed donor brick paver with our Club name. We collected & delivered school supplies, Spanish books, underwear, coats & hoodies. We also collected l00lbs of plastic caps for Banco de Ta pitas to send to Mexico & sold to help children with cancer.

2024-2025 Letha H Brown Literacy Synopsis

Be inspired by the Literacy projects shared by Altrusa District Nine Clubs... Winner were announced and recognized at the 2026 District Nine Conference in Amarillo.

1st Place

Temple: “Dragoo Goes Pop! Literacy Project”

Literacy extended into families by presenting Dragoo Goes Pop! to all 1,348 kindergarten and 1st grade students in Temple. The program included a presentation to each class, each student receiving the book, lessons and enrichment activities with supplies to teachers and counselors as well as many community partners. The program was also taken to Honduras as an international focus.

2nd Place

DFW: "Book Bonanza"

To deepen our commitment to literacy throughout the whole year, Altrusa DFW successfully implemented BOOK BONANZA, a dynamic initiative that significantly broadened our reach and impact by cultivating a lifelong love of reading. In 2024-2025, we: • Distributed over 11,000 free books to 4,200 children; • Generated a community financial impact of approximately $23,100; • Received powerful feedback from community leaders affirming the difference we are making in these children’s lives. By providing these tangible tools for literacy, we met our goal of sparking a lasting passion for reading in thousands of children, while fostering a sense of dignity for those experiencing poverty.

3rd Place

Garland: "Leading Them to Literacy in the Library"

The Achievement Center of Texas has been serving special needs individuals and their families for nearly 50 years. This project provides appropriate literacy experience for ACT’s students through an inviting library space. COVID impacted ACT significantly, resulting in the loss of their lease and all materials. With the financial and hands-on support of Altrusa, partnered with an Eagle Scout candidate, ACT is able to provide a library in their new facility. This project benefits students, staff, and volunteers of ACT as it provides a relaxing and fun environment to unwind and fall in love with books.

1st Place

Pampa: “Remember, Honor, Teach”

Altrusa Pampa partnered with Wreaths Across America, whose mission is to 'remember, honor, and teach ' about veterans' sacrifices by placing evergreen wreaths with red bows on veteran 's graves at Christmas. We have 2,565 veterans in our cemeteries. In addition to our annual fundraiser for projects, we raised $43,987.00 to purchase 2,565 wreaths at $17.00 each plus expenses. We received $5.00 back for each wreath resulting in $12,825.00 to help veterans. This project helped veterans financially; brought our community together as 300 citizens came to place wreaths; and educated citizens about Altrusa's impact in the community.

2nd Place

Richardson: “ Richardson, The Kindest Town Around”

Altrusa Richardson hosted a Kindness Weekend aimed at inspiring both members and residents of Richardson to take part in meaningful acts of kindness. The event featured several hands-on service projects and was supported by a first-ever citywide kindness campaign, enthusiastically promoted by the City of Richardson. With over 95 Altrusans, guests, and city officials participating, the weekend created a powerful ripple effect of compassion and community spirit. We are thrilled to report the event’s success, with an estimated 1,300 lives positively impacted. It was a true celebration of service, unity, and the incredible power of kindness in action.

3rd place

Garland: "Making the Grade at the Boxing Gym"

Garland P.D.’s 9 th Street Boxing Gym offers training and programs for at-risk youth searching for acceptance, recognition, and a safe setting to strengthen self-confidence. The only rule for participation is: “no one competes in the ring if failing a subject.” However, the tutoring space available had taken some “knockout punches” of its own. Altrusa Garland partnered with the Garland PD and other community organizations to renovate and enhance the tutoring space, making it more inviting for study, but also to provide essential supplies and technology for student use.
