What if every Altrusan put just one book into someone’s hands? International President Christine “Chris” DeVlieger is inviting Altrusans to do exactly that through a new 90-Day Literacy Challenge, running September 1 through November 30. It’s simple, flexible, and designed so every club can participate.

The Challenge: 1 • 2 • 3

  • DONATE : Give at least one book for every club member during the 90-day challenge. A club of 20 members donates 20 books. A club of 13 donates 13. Donate more if you can!
  • CAPTURE & SHARE: Take a photo of your books, your club in action, the distribution—or the impact your project creates. Send your photos to altrusa@altrusa.org so International can showcase Altrusa’s literacy impact on social media.
  • LOG YOUR IMPACT: Record your donated books through the Altrusa International Literacy Challenge One Book at a Time III entry form under the Service tab of the Altrusa website. Books logged during this special 90-day period will be tracked by the International Office.

Make It Your Own:

This doesn’t have to be a new project—or a big project. Your club can incorporate the challenge into an existing literacy effort or create something entirely new. Books can go local, regional, or international. They can be for children or adults. And they can be new or gently loved. Most importantly, this is an opportunity to make literacy personal. Gather your members, invite a prospective member to join you, collect a few books, and put them directly into the hands of someone who needs or simply wants the joy of reading. And remember: Every book is a beginning.

This is the first year of a three-year challenge, so keep it simple and have fun. Additional features will be introduced during years two and three, with details coming in early 2027.

District Nine—Let’s Put Books in Hands!

Across Texas, Altrusans are already making a difference through literacy. Now we have an opportunity to join together as a District and show just how much can happen when one member gives one book.

So, Altrusa District Nine, what book will you put into someone’s hands?
