During the 1980's, the United Nations began focusing attention on issues related to the family. In 1983, based on the recommendations of the Economic and Social Council, the Commission for Social Development in its resolution on the Role of the family in the development process (1983/23) requested the Secretary-General to enhance awareness among decision makers and the public of the problems and needs of the family, as well as of effective ways of meeting those needs.

In its resolution 1985/29 of 29 May 1985, the Council invited the General Assembly to consider the possibility of including in the provisional agenda of its forty-first session an item entitled “Families in the development process”, with a view to consider a request to the Secretary-General to initiate a process of development of global awareness of the issues involved, directed towards Governments, intergovernmental and non-governmental organizations and public opinion.

Later, based on the recommendations of the Commission for Social Development, formulated in its 30th round of sessions, The Assembly invited all States to make their views known concerning the possible proclamation of an international year of the family and to offer their comments and proposals.

The Council also requested the Secretary-General to submit to the General Assembly at its forty-third session a comprehensive report, based on the comments and proposals of Member States on the possible proclamation of such a year and other ways and means to improve the position and well-being of the family and intensify international co-operation as part of global efforts to advance social progress and development.

In its resolution 44/82 of 9 December 1989, The General Assembly proclaimed The International Year of the Family.

In 1993, the General Assembly decided in a resolution (A/RES/47/237) that 15 May of every year should be observed as The International Day of Families. This day provides an opportunity to promote awareness of issues relating to families and to increase the knowledge of the social, economic and demographic processes affecting families.

On 25 September 2015, the 193 member states of the United Nations unanimously adopted the Sustainable Development Goals, a set of 17 goals aiming to eliminate poverty, discrimination, abuse and preventable deaths, address environmental destruction, and usher in an era of development for all people, everywhere. Families and family-oriented policies and programmes are vital for the achievement of many of these goals.

Once a year we do a mid-year evaluation and of course our officer initiations, which is always a special event. If we end up with an evening with no speaker for one reason or another, we'll fill in with something fun to get to know each other a little better. We love to have guests at our program meetings so they can see who we are on a different level. We invite everyone to attend anytime.

In 1999, the General Assembly endorsed the recommendation made by the  World Conference of Ministers Responsible for Youth (Lisbon, 8-12 August 1998) that 12 August be declared International Youth Day.

International Youth Day (IYD) gives an opportunity to celebrate and mainstream young peoples’ voices, actions and initiatives, as well as their meaningful, universal and equitable engagement. The commemoration will take the form of a podcast-style discussion that is hosted by youth for youth, together with independently organized commemorations around the world that recognize the importance of youth participation in political, economic and social life and processes.

Each year the International Day of Peace is observed around the world on 21 September. The UN General Assembly has declared this as a day devoted to strengthening the ideals of peace, through observing 24 hours of non-violence and cease-fire.

 

The International Day of Peace was established in 1981 by the United Nations General Assembly. Two decades later, in 2001, the General Assembly unanimously voted to designate the Day as a period of non-violence and cease-fire.

Monthly Business meeting. Guests are welcome at all of our meetings. We take care of our club's business during a lunch meeting between noon to 1:00 p.m. 12 months of the year. We are currently meeting at the First United Methodist Church Lively Hall with fabulous meals cooked special just for us.  Our agendas are posted on our private Facebook page, with results posted shortly afterwards for those not able to attend so that our remote members can keep up with our happenings! Come see us anytime!

The San Antonio Club meets on the second Thursday of every month at 6:00 p.m. for business, service, and camaraderie. Contact the club for location information.

Monthly meeting where we vote on upcoming service projects, fundraisers and donations. Meet and greet starts at 6; meeting starts at 6:30 PM.

Altrusa International of Garland gathers on the 2nd Thursday monthly to conduct the business and programs of the club. The meeting starts at 6:30 pm.  Attendees pay $26/pp for Dinner.

World Food Day is an international day celebrated every year worldwide on 16 October to commemorate the date of the founding of the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization in 1945. The day is celebrated widely by many other organizations concerned with hunger and food security, including the World Food Programme and the International Fund for Agricultural Development. WFP received the Nobel Prize in Peace for 2020 for their efforts to combat hunger, contribute to peace in conflict areas, and for playing a leading role in stopping the use of hunger in the form of a weapon for war and conflict.^[1]

Join Altrusa International of Austin every third Tuesday at 6:30 PM. We rotate between a business meeting, service project and membership event every quarter. Altrusa International of Richardson, Inc. gathers on the 3rd Thursday monthly to conduct the business  / programs of the club.   Social times starts at 6:30p.  Meeting starts at 7:00 pm.

UN Day marks the anniversary of the entry into force in 1945 of the UN Charter. With the ratification of this founding document by the majority of its signatories, including the five permanent members of the Security Council, the United Nations officially came into being.

There is no other global organization with the legitimacy, convening power and normative impact of the United Nations. Today, the urgency for all countries to come together, to fulfil the promise of the nations united, has rarely been greater.

24 October has been celebrated as United Nations Day since 1948. In 1971, the United Nations General Assembly recommended that the day be observed by Member States as a public holiday.

Our Program Meetings usually entail having a fabulous dinner and speaker. Our speakers are generally arranged a year in advance and from our community. They give enlightening or informative speeches. Once a year we do a mid-year evaluation and of course our officer initiations, which is always a special event. If we end up with an evening with no speaker for one reason or another, we'll fill in with something fun to get to know each other a little better. We love to have guests at our program meetings so they can see who we are on a different level. We invite everyone to attend anytime.

Altrusa International of Collin County, Inc. gathers on the 2nd and 4th Thursday monthly to conduct the business/programs of the club.  Business Meetings are on the 2nd Thursday. Program Meetings are on the 4th Thursday. Meetings start at 12:00 pm.

National Make A Difference Day brings community service to a whole new level each year. Organizations join forces on the fourth Saturday in October to make a difference, big or small. Millions of people have united in the common mission to improve the lives of others.
